The Role of Connector Structural Design in Downhole Pressure and Vibration Performance

Integrating Glass-Sealed Feedthroughs, High-Strength Alloys, and Elastomeric Damping Layers

During downhole operation, MWD/LWD tools are subjected to high levels of vibration and shock generated by drilling dynamics. Due to limited space inside the instrument package and the requirement for direct measurement of downhole vibration and temperature, many electronic components cannot be effectively isolated from these harsh conditions. To mitigate vibration-induced damage, some designs employ composite structures combining high-temperature alloys with fluororubber (FKM), in which the elastomer layer provides partial absorption and attenuation of shock and vibration energy. The metal structure provides mechanical strength and pressure-bearing capability, while the FKM layer offers environmental isolation, vibration damping, and stress buffering, improving the connector’s dynamic response under downhole thermal, pressure, and vibration conditions.

While such metal–fluororubber composite structures are effective in improving dynamic response by reducing vibration transmission and stress concentration, elastomeric materials alone cannot provide long-term hermetic sealing and stable electrical insulation under extreme downhole temperature and pressure. Therefore, in the electrical conduction path, glass-to-metal sealing is commonly introduced as the primary hermetic barrier, ensuring reliable electrical isolation and pressure integrity. The combination of a glass-sealed core with an external metal housing and elastomeric secondary seal enables a balanced design in which hermeticity, mechanical strength, and vibration tolerance are achieved simultaneously.

For downhole applications requiring reliable hermetic sealing, pressure capability, and vibration tolerance, the Sunkye‘s D011 series incorporates a glass-sealed feedthrough integrated with a high-strength alloy shell and a FKM secondary seal.
