Electronic Connector Requirements for the Application Environment

The common environmental properties of electronic connectors include temperature resistance, humidity resistance, salt spray resistance, vibration resistance and impact resistance.

1. Temperature resistance of electronic connectors

At present, the maximum operating temperature of electronic connectors is 200ºC, and the minimum temperature is -65ºC. Since the current generates heat at the contact point when the electronic connector is working, resulting in temperature rise, it is generally believed that the operating temperature should be equal to the sum of the ambient temperature and the contact temperature.

In some specifications, the maximum temperature rise allowed by the electronic connector under the rated operating current is clearly specified.

2. Moisture resistance of electronic connectors

The intrusion of moisture will affect the insulation performance of electronic connectors and corrode metal parts. The constant humidity and heat test conditions are relative humidity of 90%~95% (according to product specifications, up to 98%), temperature of +40±20ºC, and the test time is at least 96h according to product regulations. The alternating damp heat test is more stringent.

3. Salt spray resistance of electronic connectors

When the electronic connector works in an environment containing moisture and salt, its metal structural parts, contacts, and surface treatment layers may cause galvanic corrosion, which will affect the physical and electrical properties of the electronic connector. In order to evaluate the ability of electronic connectors to withstand this environment, a salt spray test is specified.

It suspends the electronic connector in a temperature-controlled test chamber, sprays out the sodium chloride solution with a specified concentration with compressed air to form a salt fog atmosphere, and the exposure time is specified by the product specification, at least 48 hours.

4. Vibration and shock resistance of electronic connectors

Vibration and shock resistance are important properties of electronic connectors, especially important in special application environments such as aviation and aerospace, railway and road transportation, and it is an important indicator for testing the robustness of the mechanical structure of electronic connectors and the reliability of electrical contacts.

There are clear regulations in the relevant test methods. In the shock test, the peak acceleration, duration and shape of the shock pulse and the time of interruption of electrical continuity shall be specified.

5. Other environmental performance of electronic connectors

According to the requirements of use, other environmental properties of electronic connectors include sealing (air leakage, liquid pressure), liquid immersion (resistance to deterioration of specific liquids), and low air pressure.
